As of the 1st October 2015 it is a mandatory legal requirement to have a smoke detector fitted within a rented property. You are required to have 1 smoke detector for each storey of a dwelling which is functional and has been tested.
From the point of installation it is up to the tenant to look after the smoke detector on and on going basis.
